A mattress protector is a cover that fits over your mattress. Its main purpose is to protect your mattress from stains and other types of dirt. You can also find anti-dust mite mattress protectors that provide a physical barrier against dust mites in your mattress. If you’d like to learn more about this, feel free to check out the mattress guide.
So, there isn't just one type of mattress protector—there are several. We'll walk you through all the mattress protectors available and how they can benefit your bedding on a daily basis.
What is a waterproof mattress protector used for?
A waterproof mattress protector is a cover with a waterproof surface. The mattress protector is designed to be placed directly on top of your mattress. Its waterproof surface is usually made of a plastic film that prevents any liquid from passing through the mattress protector and reaching your mattress.
You may also come across waterproof mattress protectors under the name “alèse.” Now that you know what they are, you might be wondering: Should you choose a waterproof mattress protector? The answer is yes, for several reasons.
First of all, a waterproof mattress protector will help extend the life of your mattress. This type of protector helps prevent stains on your mattress (e.g., children’s bedwetting, menstrual leaks, etc.).
In addition, during the summer you may sweat a little more than usual in bed. To prevent sweat from being absorbed by your mattress, you can place a waterproof mattress protector between your mattress and your fitted sheet.
This will make it easier for you to wash your waterproof mattress protector by putting it in the washing machine or gently washing it by hand. This will keep your mattress free of stains and make it easier to care for.
Good to know: As soon as your waterproof mattress protector develops cracks in its waterproof plastic layer, be sure to replace it with a new one. As soon as the first crack appears on the plasticized surface, your mattress protector will no longer be able to guarantee complete waterproofing between your bedding and your mattress.
Which mattress protector should you choose for a baby's bed?
It's easy to see why a mattress protector is useful for a baby's crib. Between possible leaks from the baby's diaper, spit-up, and other little noises a baby makes in its sleep, the mattress protector helps keep the crib mattress clean.
How do you choose a mattress protector for your baby? You can find different types of mattress protectors for babies, such as:
- the tray-shaped mattress protector, which has four large elastic bands at its corners to keep the mattress protector in place on the baby's mattress;
- the fitted sheet-style mattress protector, which is placed directly on the baby's mattress like a fitted sheet;
- the full-coverage mattress protector, which comes in the form of a zippered cover into which you place the baby's mattress.
In addition to the design of the baby mattress protector, another important factor is its composition. For infants, it is essential to choose a mattress protector that contains no components or chemical treatments that could be toxic or cause allergic reactions.
Therefore, choose mattress protectors made from materials that are as natural as possible. Also, make sure your child’s mattress protector has good liquid-absorbing properties to prevent any feeling of dampness during the night.
For example, organic cotton mattress protectors for babies are made from materials that are safe for your little one and offer excellent liquid absorption.
Are anti-dust-mite mattress protectors really effective?
The war on dust mites has been raging for many years now in our bedding. Mattresses, box springs, bedding—nothing is spared from these tiny mites that happily thrive in fabrics. Their favorite habitat? Fabrics exposed to heat and moisture. So it’s easy to see why dust mites thrive in such large numbers in our beds.
Even though dust mites are invisible to the naked eye, they are nonetheless a source of many allergies. The allergen is not the dust mite itself, but rather its feces. It’s not a very pleasant thought at first glance, but fortunately, there are solutions.
First of all, you may have noticed that many mattresses are treated with anti-dust mite chemicals. Numerous studies have shown that these chemical treatments are far from being the most effective.
The main reason is that the effectiveness of these chemical treatments diminishes as the weeks go by while you use your mattress. Considering that even the most basic mattress models are used for at least 7 years, it’s safe to say that anti-dust mite treatments don’t last that long. Furthermore, we do not yet have enough long-term data to assess the potential toxicity of these chemical anti-dust mite treatments.
Good to know: Some mattresses are naturally dust-mite-resistant. For example, natural latex mattresses aren’t very popular with dust mites. For people with dust-mite allergies, a natural latex mattress is therefore a long-lasting and 100% natural solution.
Another effective solution is an anti-dust mite mattress protector. An anti-dust mite mattress protector acts as a mechanical barrier, preventing dust mites from moving between your mattress and your bedding. If your mattress is made of a material that promotes dust mite proliferation (e.g., synthetic foam), this type of mattress protector will prevent dust mites in your mattress from moving up into your bedding.
On the other hand, if you have a natural latex mattress—which is naturally dust-mite-resistant—this type of mattress protector will prevent dust mite droppings that may be present in your bedding from reaching your mattress.
In both cases, this type of mattress protector makes it easier to care for and sanitize your mattress and bedding to eliminate dust mites and their droppings.
But how do you choose an anti-dust mite mattress protector? You’ll mainly find two types of anti-dust mite mattress protectors on the market:
- chemically treated anti-dust mite mattress covers;
- anti-dust mite mattress covers with a very tight weave that acts as a protective barrier.
If you're sensitive to dust mites, it's a safe bet that you're also sensitive to chemical treatments. Therefore, make sure that anti-dust mite mattress protectors containing chemical treatments don't cause you any allergies or additional health problems. When in doubt, choose a 100% natural anti-dust mite mattress protector.
Keep in mind that it is easier to wash a chemical-free anti-dust mite mattress protector than a chemically treated one, which will inevitably lose its effectiveness after each wash.
Another important point: be sure to choose a mattress protector that fits your mattress properly. Your anti-dust mite mattress protector should fit your mattress perfectly. Otherwise, dust mites can easily crawl over the edge of your mattress and move freely throughout your bedding.
How to Choose the Right Mattress Protector?
A mattress protector allows you to effectively protect your mattress and absorb excess moisture caused, for example, by sweating at night. There are several types of mattress protectors available in different shapes and materials.
How do you choose a mattress protector? First, you need to choose a style of mattress protector that will effectively protect your mattress. You can find mattress protectors in the following styles:
- a panel with large elastic bands at the four corners of the mattress protector to keep it securely in place on your mattress, but which does not cover the edges of your mattress;
- a fitted sheet that fits just like a standard fitted sheet but also has the advantage of protecting the edges of your mattress;
- A full-coverage cover that provides complete protection for both sides of your mattress as well as its edges.
Note that a fitted sheet-style mattress protector is more than enough to effectively protect your mattress. Full-coverage mattress protectors are generally reserved for older mattresses with surface damage.
Also, be sure to choose a mattress protector that fits the size of your mattress. A mattress protector that is too large may cause uncomfortable wrinkles under your fitted sheet when you move around in bed at night.
To avoid sweating at night, you should also choose a breathable and absorbent mattress protector made from a natural material such as cotton. To minimize the risk of allergies, you can opt for an organic cotton mattress protector.
Now you have all the information you need to choose a mattress protector that will effectively protect your mattress while ensuring a good night's sleep and promoting your health.
