FURNISHINGS & HOUSEHOLD
Our home is our oasis of comfort, a sanctuary where we can relax. That’s why it’s especially important to invest in furnishings and household items that are good for both us and the environment. Here are our favorite brands for sustainable and fairly produced household and decorative items:
HALM
True to its motto, “Less Waste, More Taste,” the Halm brand produces high-quality glass drinking straws. We love the company’s vision of offering a sustainable alternative to plastic straws. There are different styles to suit every drink.
The drinking straws are made in various sizes from special glass that is manufactured in Germany using solar energy. It is free of BPA and mineral oil. The glass straws are produced in a variety of styles and are available in straight or curved shapes, as well as in different lengths.
Founded in 2016, the company is making a significant contribution to reducing the use of more than one billion drinking straws. For every drinking straw set sold, HALM donates to Trash Hero World, a movement dedicated to organizing global cleanups. Through this initiative, HALM is committed to environmental protection in order to counteract the damage already caused by plastic waste.
SONNENGLAS®
The fair-trade cooler is perfect for summer camping.
The fair-trade Sonnenglas from South Africa is an eco-friendly lantern. It was developed in the townships of Johannesburg and converts solar energy into warm, bright light.
In our opinion, the Sonnenglas is the perfect companion for a camping trip or a picnic. But it also makes an excellent decoration for our home. The inside of the lantern offers space to display little treasures and show them off in the best light.
Incidentally, Sonnenglas helps make the world a little brighter. Sonnenglas is produced sustainably and fairly. It is made from at least 70% recycled glass and metal. We particularly appreciate that Sonnenglas is produced according to strict fair trade standards and already provides jobs for 65 people in the suburbs of Johannesburg.
hello simple
hello simple is a brand of sustainable and plastic-free cosmetics and household products. Its product line includes vegan natural cosmetics and organic laundry detergents, and, as of April 2020, a cleaning kit.
The company was founded in 2016 by Lisa and Jacqueline. We spoke with Lisa about the story behind hello simple.
“We have developed natural products for the body and home that are free of microplastics, aluminum, and other harmful substances, and that you can mix yourself at home. With hello simple, we focus on using as few carefully selected, fresh, certified organic ingredients as possible—ingredients that are gentle on the skin and the environment.”

DIY Cleaning Kit for 7 Recipes
All the ingredients included in the brand’s DIY kits are precisely portioned. We like how easy they are to prepare, since there’s no need to measure anything out. The “do-it-yourself” approach also raises awareness of the ingredients that go into detergents and cosmetic products. Furthermore, the online store offers various zero-waste alternatives, such as solid dish soap—which is 100% packaging-free—laundry detergent in paper bags, and deodorant creams in glass jars.
For every deodorant cream sold, an additional 50 cents is donated to protect our oceans. We think the brand’s commitment is great and support its efforts to find long-term zero-waste alternatives for all drugstore products.
EAT & DRINK
Happy Coffee
Happy Coffee stands for high-quality Coffee beans Through direct trade with small-scale farmers in Mexico, Ethiopia, and Peru, Happy Coffee aims to make both consumers and the farmers behind the coffee happy. All of the brand’s coffee beans are certified organic and are gently roasted in small batches in a drum roaster at a family-owned roastery in Hamburg.
The coffee is roasted almost daily, so it reaches customers within a few days of roasting. This gives it its aromatic flavor. We appreciate the social responsibility behind Happy Coffee’s production and value the high quality of the coffee.
