A good box spring is essential
The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Beds and Box Springs
In the world of bedding, a large portion of the beds and box springs available on the market are made from melamine-coated wood. But what does that mean for your sleep? Melamine-coated wood is, in fact, made from a resin-based panel. This resin, called melamine, is a type of molecule that can be transformed into a kind of plastic through a chemical reaction. It is applied to a panel made of fine wood particles, which is then covered with a decorative sheet. Combining these three elements produces a melamine-faced panel, which is essentially considered a plastic panel.
And that's exactly the problem.
First, from a health perspective, this type of plastic emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are toxic and may even be carcinogenic.
Furthermore, from a purely functional standpoint, melamine is not known for its durability. On the contrary, it is vulnerable to impacts, temperature fluctuations, and changes in the environment. This makes it difficult to keep it in perfect condition when moving. Although it is possible to reuse it creatively—by upcycling it, for example—it is often thrown away and rarely recycled.
And finally, from an environmental standpoint, it’s something of a disaster. To make melamine-faced wood, you have to use corrosive chemicals that harm the environment, as well as toxic adhesives that pollute your home.
A solution that everyone likes
In light of this, at Kipli we’re committed to redefining industry standards with our sustainable solid-wood bed base. Our goal was to offer you a responsible alternative, so we set out to find a bed base that would be:
- First and foremost, it’s durable, so it will last for many years without breaking or squeaking.
- Next, of course, it should be natural, so that all the time you spend on it is healthy and not affected by toxic glues and varnishes.
- And the key to it all is an elegant design, so you'll keep it for a (very) long time without ever getting tired of it.
In keeping with this commitment to sustainability, it was unthinkable that our LIVIA bed frame would be manufactured on the other side of the world, like the vast majority of beds. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted as close to home as possible, by skilled workers who are fairly compensated.

The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits
To meet all these objectives, we chose locally sourced solid wood as the primary material for LIVIA. Durable, strong, and natural, it checked all the boxes on our list of requirements. We ultimately chose French oak. To take our commitment even further, we chose a finish made with a natural, water-based, VOC-free varnish to enhance the oak’s beautiful color.
The design of this bed
As we all know, choosing the right mattress for a good night’s sleep is essential, but choosing a good box spring is also important. It accounts for 30 to 40 percent of your bed’s firmness, which is no small matter.
This platform bed was designed by the French design studio SCMP DESIGN OFFICE. With its clean, elegant lines, we wanted the LIVIA to stand out for its modern design while remaining a timeless piece.
Designed to meet the unique needs of every sleeper, this bed can be paired with a headboard and nightstands to complete the look. And speaking of sleepers, the focus has, of course, been on comfort. It features rigid slats to provide firm support, and they are left uncovered to maximize the breathability of your bedding and help it last longer.
Locally made
For its production, we turned to the Haute-Marne region, where Charles and his artisans are united by a shared commitment: to preserve traditional craftsmanship while modernizing the production of oak products. In this workshop, they handcraft high-quality materials, taking great care to respect the environment and championing the “Made in France” label.
