Behind the Scenes of How We Make Our Linen Sofas - Kipli

A behind-the-scenes look at how our linen sofas are made.

In an industry where well-being at home is a major focus, the furniture market is, if you will, somewhat ambivalent. It promises beautiful, stylish, and comfortable furniture to help us feel good in our homes. And yet , indoor air is just as polluted—if not more so—than outdoor air, partly because of the products and materials used to manufacture this furniture.

By seeking to produce in new ways to address these various challenges, Kipli is coming up with innovative solutions. So you can feel just as comfortable inside your home as you do outside.

The sofa market: a (highly) standardized sector

The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Sofas

The first question is: what does “standardized sofas” mean? Well, these are the sofas most commonly found on the market: made from petrochemical-based foam (i.e., derived from oil) and melamine-coated wood —which is essentially plastic—upholstered in polyester (yet more plastic) and manufactured on the other side of the world.  With such a wide price range, one might wonder about the quality of these sofas, which sell for between €300 and €1,500.

And that’s where the whole problem lies. We accept this type of sofa as the norm, without knowing why, or understanding its benefits and consequences. If we look at the issue of durability, we see that the foam used is of inferior quality, causing the sofa to sag prematurely within the first few years of use, thereby losing both comfort and aesthetic appeal.

When discussing the composition of synthetic sofas, many terms are used: polyester, polyurethane, etc. But simply put, this means that we spend a significant portion of our lives sitting on petroleum-based products. And this is not without consequences: these materials can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are harmful to our health.

A sofa like this causes pollution throughout its entire life cycle. From the very beginning, it involves a long manufacturing and distribution chain because it’s made on the other side of the world under appalling working conditions. Then there are the VOCs it releases into our homes, and even more so afterward, since these sofas are rarely recycled and are simply (and unfortunately) landfilled.

A solution that everyone likes.

In light of this, we wanted to redefine the standards of this industry by offering a responsible alternative that is just as comfortable—if not more so. We identified several criteria, and they were significant ones:

  • First, a sofa that’s durable. In other words, a sofa that doesn’t sag after three years and retains its comfort and good looks long after that.
  • To ensure it protects your home and doesn't contribute to indoor pollution, it must be natural—free of chemical treatments and plastics.
  • And the bottom line: we wanted a comfortable sofa with better ergonomics and better support. After all, a sofa where you can take naps and watch movies isn’t so bad (it can even be addictive).

In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, it was unthinkable that our sofa would be manufactured on the other side of the world, like most others. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted as close to home as possible, by skilled workers who are fairly compensated.

Our goal: to offer you a natural alternative

The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits

As you may have already noticed, the most remarkable material in this sofa is linen! Linen—a durable, lightweight fabric that requires little water—is eco-friendly and healthy, with no impact on health or biodiversity and free of chemical treatments. To replace the usual polyester covers, we turned to Lemaitre Demeester, French weavers since 1835. They preserve their ancestral craftsmanship, offering exceptional quality and durability in their weaves. Committed to eco-friendly production, their“Masters of Linen”-certified fabrics are made from local fibers sourced from northern France and Normandy.

Next, to replace a large portion of the synthetic foams, we opted for untreated natural latex, which is more durable and, above all, much more elastic; latex does not lose its shape and retains its comfort for a long time.

To ensure they're nice and soft, we've also added recycled feathers to the cushions.

We’ve kept a small amount of foam to round out the corners of our sofa—something that’s impossible to do with latex or wood. But don’t worry—it makes up only 1.8% of the composition. And finally, we’ve chosen solid beech wood, which is very durable, to support it all!

The design of these sofas

With all these beautiful materials, we needed to combine techniques and craftsmanship to bring out the best in them. We chose to make our sofa’s cover fully removable and dry-cleanable, so that little accidents are never a reason to replace the entire sofa. The latex seat is supported by hand-assembled steel springs. To give the cushions more body, the seat is also filled with recycled feathers and down.

We designed this sofa to make your everyday life more comfortable —both in terms of use and maintenance —all thanks to the natural materials we used.

The desire for local, family-run production

As you can see, sustainability and responsibility were the guiding principles behind the design of this sofa.

To ensure responsible manufacturing, we therefore chose to locate our production in northern France rather than in Asia, in order to prioritize a skilled, well-paid workforce whose well-being is our top priority.

And so we turned to a family-owned business. Founded in 1965, this workshop is now a leading name in French sofa manufacturing—specifically, linen sofas.

For nearly 20 years, they have been committed to a sustainable “Made in France” approach, which embodies excellence and precision in craftsmanship. Our sofas are hand-finished to ensure the highest quality. Driven by the same commitments as we are, they make sure every step of their production is carried out with full responsibility and sustainability in mind. And that’s why we love them 💚
