French Mattresses: A Wide Gap Between Expectations and Reality

The French and Their Mattresses: A Survey Conducted by Kipli in Collaboration with Harris Interactive

Although it plays such an unobtrusive role in the home, the mattress nonetheless has a significant impact on the user’s well-being and the environment: sleep, health, ecology… a multitude of factors that are not always fully appreciated by those most directly affected.

Three years after its founding, Kipli took the initiative to analyze French people’s attachment to their mattresses as partof a study conducted in collaboration with Harris Interactive ( 1).

Composition: Requirements That Go Beyond the Norm

When it comes to buying a new mattress, composition is one of the main factors to consider: it ranks third, after comfort (the top factor) and price.

About One in two French people say they know what their mattress is made of… Yet more than 90% of the mattresses sold in France are petroleum-based, and only 17% of respondents are aware of this.

For 85% of consumers, it is a priority that the mattress be made from natural materials. However, natural mattresses—made of latex or wool—account for only a small portion of the market (less than 10%).

The composition of a mattress has a real impact not only on the environment in general (manufacturing, waste, etc.), but also on indoor air quality in particular.

Today, two out of three French people believe that indoor air is less polluted than outdoor air.

However, the Indoor Air Quality Observatory (OQAI) (2) has highlighted the poor quality of indoor air (VOC levels, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, etc.). Between 68.4% (trichloroethylene) and 100% ( formaldehyde and hexaldehyde) of homes have air that is more polluted than the air outside.

Sustainability: Raising Awareness

71% of respondents believe that a mattress lasts no more than 10 years.

In practice, about half of all French people keep their mattresses for 10 years or more. The other half replaces their bedding more often. Gold This industry has a significant impact between the countless imports, the resulting waste, and polluting materials…

This impact is often overlooked, even though 83% of French people care about the environment.

While Kipli is committed to offering a healthy and sustainable mattress, this is, of course, to reduce its environmental impact, but also so that users can benefit from it.

A natural latex mattress lasts much longer than a conventional mattress. It’s a wise investment, since you’ll need to replace your bedding less often.

Beyond these environmental and financial considerations, a mattress made from natural latex and organic cotton helps improve sleep quality: it reduces indoor air pollution and optimizes comfort (support, softness, breathability).
