The Importance of a Good Mattress Base
The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Beds and Box Springs
In the bedding industry, polyester—a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum—is commonly used for the filling and upholstery of upholstered beds. This material raises concerns regarding health and environmental impact.
From a health perspective, polyester can disrupt body temperature regulation during sleep when it is in contact with or close to the body. It can also emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may cause irritation and allergic reactions. That’s all there is to it. There are also slats covered with polyester fabric and synthetic foams that limit the breathability of bedding, promoting the growth of dust mites and other pests. From an environmental perspective, polyester production consumes a great deal of energy and relies on fossil fuels, contributing to their depletion and pollution. Polyester products are not biodegradable, and recycling them is complex, thereby exacerbating waste problems. Finally, they are partly responsible for the microplastics found in oceans, waterways, and marine life (yes, even in the stomachs of fish…). Standard storage beds also present problems. Most lack a bottom in the storage compartment, posing a hygiene issue because stored items come into direct contact with the floor. Furthermore, the opening and closing mechanisms of these beds are often of poor quality, which can reduce their durability and practicality, while also sometimes being noisy.

Aware of this troubling reality, we at Kipli are committed to transforming industry standards with our OTTO storage bed. Our goal was to offer you a more sustainable option by designing a bed that meets these specific—and by no means insignificant—criteria:
- First and foremost, it's durable, so you can keep it for a long time.
- Next, we wanted it to be natural, so that the time you spend on it wouldn't be affected by VOCs, harmful substances, or chemicals.
- But we also wanted it to be practical—we wanted it to be as easy to use as saying “hello.”
- And finally, all these features are brought together by an elegant design, so you'll never get tired of it.

The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits
To achieve and bring to life this goal of eliminating polyester, we chose a fabric made entirely of linen from Lemaitre Demeestere, one of France’s oldest weavers. These French weavers preserve and celebrate their ancestral craftsmanship to ensure their fabrics offer exceptional quality and durability. Driven by a commitment to eco-friendly production, their fabrics are certified “Masters of Linen,” and their fibers come from northern France and Normandy to ensure local production. Linen is a durable, lightweight, and supple material that is easy to grow and requires very little water. Most importantly, it has no negative impact on your health or the surrounding biodiversity, and it undergoes no chemical treatment.
To create this cladding, we chose to build a structure using PEFC-certified French poplar—meaning the wood comes from sustainably managed forests. It is also CARB-certified and combined with solid beech slats. These woods are durable and safe for your health because they are not treated with chemicals or adhesives.
The design of this bed frame
To meet this goal, we chose a French poplar wood frame to ensure it has all the strength needed to stand the test of time. We also equipped it with high-quality hydraulic pistons, manufactured in Germany, making opening and closing the trunk easy and ensuring it will last for years to come. In terms of practicality, we’ve created a storage space with a solid wooden bottom to protect your belongings from dust and make it as easy to use as can be. And finally, to ensure it meets everyone’s needs and preferences, we’ve designed it to accommodate all mattress sizes and made the headboard removable.
